Farm Tour: Cadbury Farm and Low-Sugar Pastures

Saturday, March 27, 2010
10:00am to 12 noon
Cadbury Farm
Carnation, WA
FREE!

Tour a 15-acre horse property on Tolt Hill in Carnation. This high-end dressage facility has worked hard to maintain the heath of its natural features as well as the health of its horses. See beautiful maple, cedar and fir trees as well as pastures, large mud-free sacrifice areas, and a beautiful covered dressage arena. Chore efficiency is central to the management of this facility. An ecology block compost bin collects stall waste in a highly efficient manner off one end of the barn, to be spread on the pastures later in place of commercial fertilizers

BONUS: This owner/trainer has a lot of experience dealing with EPSM and Insulin Resistant horses. The issue of pasture turn out has always been an issue for them. One way of solving pasture turn-out problems is to plant a grass blend that is also genetically engineered to support the health of metabolically compromised horses. Join us for a healthy discussion of pasture management, horse health issues and management.

What happens when a dog ingests manure from a recently dewormed horse? It depends, but if it was ivermectin and the dog is sensitive to that product, you might find yourself in a condition red-alert making a speedy trip to the emergency clinic! Attend this outdoor event at the farm of Alayne Blickle to learn the latest on deworming horses, concerns/updates for dog owners on potential sensitivities to horse dewormers and how to properly handle manure after your horse has been dewormed.

Equine veterinarian Dr. Steve Latimer will discuss the latest info on equine deworming protocols. Small animal veterinarian Dr. Melanie Caviness will speak on the canine aspect of the issue—what happens when dogs are exposed to horse dewormers? What are the symptoms and what can be done? Alayne Blickle will cover composting and information on manure management. We will provide testing kits (free from WSU) as well as instruction on how to test your dog to see if it carries the mutant gene making them particularly sensitive to ivermectin (and other drugs).

Bring your family to this encore performance to explore ways of incorporating children into eco-horse keeping. This 1.25-acre horse property has 2 horses, a pony—and 3 young children, who have been taught the joys of composting, manure management, horse safety, feeding and other aspects of the horse care routine. This event features learning/activity stations for kids and a tour for adults where we address a common problem in horse families: so often kids are taught about riding without the responsibilities for horse care. Other times it’s a struggle on how to scale things down to a kid’s level or what horse-safe chores to include young ones on. Join KCD, HCW and the landowner at this unique educational event to explore how children can become a part of green horsekeeping on your farm.
