Maple Valley

Our 10 acre Maple Valley, WA horse property was a fun, but challenging work-in-progress that taught us so much. When we moved there, it was all mud and manure and no pastures. Here are some of the practices we established and the facilities we had during the time we lived there, from 1998 to 2010. Some of the photos below are the "before" photos of what it looked like when we first moved in, paired with the "afters." - Alayne Blickle, Horses for Clean Water

farm features and practices

We managed our property as environmentally sensitive and chemical-free as possible with the following practices:

  • Manure management and composting
  • Pasture management and rotational grazing
  • Mud management - gutters & downspouts, footing in paddocks, French drainage
  • Wildlife enhancement
  • Native plant hedgerow
  • Least toxic insect control - bird and bat boxes

Some of the facilities we had included:

  • Four stall main barn with tack room and outdoor wash rack - attached paddocks for stalls
  • Run-in shed with large paddock
  • 70’ round pen
  • 110’ x 80’ outdoor arena
  • 4 acres of pasture and rotational grazing
  • Access to 160 acres of public land for trail riding
