June & September 2019 Cowgirl Retreats Now Open for Registration!

Alayne Blickle

Our Cowgirl Retreat is designed for committed women riders interested in improving riding/horsemanship skills and mind/body awareness. These weekends weave together both education and relaxation opportunities—all created with you in mind!

The June 2019 SPR Cowgirl Retreat riding clinics will focus on ranch riding skills and will be taught by Matt Livengood, NRHA, ASHA & NVRHA judge/trainer/show manager. Ranch riding and ranch horse versatility are increasingly popular disciplines which can be performed by any breed of horse. They focus on transitions, quality of gaits, and moving body parts with precision. Ranch riding is a fun way to break up training routines and offer new learning experiences for us and our horses—no matter your chosen discipline. At this retreat, we will have new ranch obstacles as well as an opportunity to introduce your horse to cows, both live and mechanical.

Afternoon lectures may be Alayne on eco-friendly horse keeping and eco-tourism, or it may be both Alayne and Matt speaking on the history of wild horses in North America with a live demo. Past speakers have covered topics of equine body work, ground work with horses, women’s self-defense, and tourism.

As always, these retreats include yoga and meditation to invite attention to our own physical and mental well-being. We will listen and connect with what our bodies are telling us, and turn that into action—perhaps you'll learn to improve posture, increase range of motion, or even just relax for a few moments. Self-care for the body and the mind can have a positive impact on our work with horses.  (No yoga or meditation experience necessary.)

Each three-day retreat includes:

  • Morning yoga taught by a trained yoga practitioner

  • 3+ hours each day of ranch riding instruction

  • Afternoon lecture/activity related to horses or personal development

  • 8 meals prepared with locally sourced, sustainable, and organic produce (as available)

  • Meals will be low-gluten, low-dairy, and no red meat

  • Daily afternoon free time to relax on the patio, take a dip in the pool, or work with Matt Livengood on improving a specific horsemanship skill

  • Afternoon meditation sessions taught by a health care professional

  • Daily happy hour

  • Evening movie (equine related)

(Does not include horse/human housing—but that is available!)
